MM #2    BIG PICTURE

Click here to see Mind Map 2

While the coach is listening to the client describe their situation or challenge, the coach must “come-from” championing and advocating the client; they must listen with the “attitude” that the client is ready, willing, able, and perfect.   The coach gets the big picture of the potential relationship while the client talks about the little picture (the challenge.)

1. Client Type (Who or What)
The “who and “what” client types are arbitrary divisions based on my opinion alone.  I think it is an interesting additional way to type the person who may become your client.   The Professional type can be a who or a what or both, for example, A who professional may be a coach, therapist,  priest, rabbi, or other spiritual advisor(heart) or a massage therapist,  acupuncturist, holistic physician (body).  The what professional may be a lawyer, accountant, financial advisor (head) or personal trainer, athletic coach (body).

2. Client Has
I use the examples on the mind map to profile the client’s current potential for being able to solve their own problems.   I assess their basic coachability in each area relative to the problem they are presenting.

3. Client Doesn’t Have
The skills, concepts and distinctions on the mind map is typical of coaching I provide -- in addition to context and perspective.

4. Add and/or Subtract
These coaching points may be required singly or in pairs.  In looking at the “big picture,” I use these four categories to determine if I am right for the client and if the client is right for me.

5. Make decision based on Client’s characteristics and Coach’s interest and abilities.
Go   = I like the client; I believe they are coachable; I believe I can work successfully with them.
Qualified Go = I have a reservation about the client or myself in the relationship, but I’m willing to proceed.
No Go  = The client is not right for me or I am not right for the client.  I will simply say, “I don’t think I am the     right coach for you.”   If the client is someone I am willing to refer, I will recommend one or more other coaches.
